Are You Deciding Between Asphalt Shingles Vs. Metal Roofing? Learn 4 Factors That Separate Them

When you own a home, there are times that you have to get a roof done. You might be building a newly constructed home. You could be renovating an existing home, or you might even just simply need a new roof.

There are a number of materials you can choose from for your new roof, but many homeowners wind up debating between asphalt shingles vs. metal roofing. Both have their advantages and disadvantages across a number of different factors. Keep reading to learn what they are.

1) Cost considerations: Asphalt shingles are by and far the cheaper of the two options in terms of initial expense, but metal roofing tends to last longer and has better value over time. A third factor that might play into your decision is which kind of roofing material could have the best net benefit on your increase in home value.

2) Appearance: If you want something traditional that matches most other homes, then asphalt shingles are the way to go. However, if you want your home to stand out and even shine a little, then metal makes a great choice. However, if you are subject to local building codes or even homeowner’s association bylaws, you need to check all the rules, regulations, and documentation to see if you are even allowed to use metal roofing.

3) Maintenance: Both asphalt and metal roofing need regular inspection and maintenance in order to remain an effective covering for your home. Having said that, inspections of metal roofing go much faster and find far fewer issues needing correction, whereas asphalt has to be checked meticulously and get upkeep twice a year in most locations.

4) Possibility of recycling: Metal roofing is not likely to be recycled any time soon, given the durability and longevity of the material. Having said that, the secondary market for scrap metal is pretty robust, so it’s likely such materials can be repurposed when they are done. On the other hand, asphalt shingles from reroof tear-offs and installation scraps generation nearly 11 million tons of refuse and waste per year, almost 10 percent of structure-construction waste. There is a growing asphalt recycling industry, but it is relatively new. If you care about the environment and waste, metal is the way to go, but asphalt might catch up.

There are of course many other factors and considerations that go into your decision of asphalt shingles vs. metal roofing, but these 4 are a great starting point in your process.

Travel Trailer Camper RV Damaged Roof Replacement

Ok YouTube what this is going to be is me replacing my entire roof that was damaged
by water on a 1992 Terry travel trailer this will work also for RVs and other campers
that have this similar style EPDM rubber roof the replacement that I used is a Dicor or
brand and I suggest using their product as it’s been tested over many years also I used
the Dicor lap sealant and adhesive that is specifically made for the rubber roof. Most of
the wood that I used to replace the roof was from Lowes and the plywood was a sheating
style 3/8ths inch. This DIY project was a learning experience and took a little bit more
time and money than what was expected but overall was much more cheap than what the RV
dealers and distributors we’re wanting to charge for the same service. This repair will
work for most recreational vehicles and all different brands such as Fleetwood Jayco
Coleman. It is really nice to be able to go and use this at campgrounds & outdoor events
and family picnics knowing that the roof is now watertight no leaks
